CENELEC: EN 50018

Application range: Zone 1 + 2 

Compression-proof capsules: Parts that can ignite an explosive atmosphere are enclosed in a casing that will survive the explosion pressure inside the casing in case of explosion.

CENELEC: EN 50019

Application range: Zone 1 + 2 

Increased safety: Measures have been taken to achieve a higher level of safety by avoiding unacceptable higher temperatures and the creation of sparks or electrical arcs.

CENELEC: EN 50020

Application range: Zone 0 + 1 + 2 

Intrinsically safe: A power circuit in which no sparks or thermal effects can occur which could cause the ignition of a certain explosive atmosphere.

Application range: Zone 1 + 2 

Casting capsule: Dangerous electrical parts are bedded in a casting compound. It basically corresponds to the known special protection class Ex s. During the transition from the old national regulations to the European standards, casting capsules as the special protection class Ex s were identified as “Casting capsules m”. 

 Gases and steam Zone 0: 

Areas in which a dangerous explosive atmosphere is constant or long-term. This usually only includes the inside of vessels such as e.g. tanks at petrol stations. Operating equipment for Zone 0 must be specially tested and approved. 

Zone 1: 

Areas where it is likely that a dangerous explosive atmosphere may occur from time to time. In particular, Zone 1 is where devices protected against explosions are used. 

Zone 2: 

Areas where it is likely that a dangerous explosive atmosphere will only occur rarely and only for a short time. Devices for this zone do not need to be approved but must have creep and leak current values in accordance with the Euro standards.  

 

 

Dust

Furthermore, there are also the zones 20, 21 and 22 for flammable dust. 

The allocation to the zones is performed according to the frequency of occurence as described above for gases and steam (constantly, occasionally, etc.).
